Bachelor of Optometry (Hons)
The SEGi Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) programme is a privately run undergraduate Optometry programme in one of the most prestigious private university colleges in the country. The excellent track record of its academic staff who have been in private optometric education since 2004 speaks for itself. Its laboratory and clinical facilities are on par with overseas institutions that offer the undergraduate Optometry programme.
The programme is run by full-time optometrically qualified lecturers, while also drawing on the expertise of external/visiting lecturers comprising Biomedical scientists, Medical Practitioners, Ophthalmic Surgeons and Practising Optometrists. Clinical training of students is carried out both in the internal clinics on campus, as well as at external sites ranging from private Optometric practices, Refractive Surgery Centres, private Ophthalmologic clinics and Hospital Eye departments.
The BOptom (Hons) at SEGi University is a 4-year programme that is wholly home-grown with potential for external validation by an overseas quality partner. Efforts are in progress to partner up with a well established institution in the United Kingdom to obtain the said external validation. This effectively will mean that graduates of the programme are regarded as academically equivalent with those graduating from the partner’s programme.
The SEGi BOptom (Hons) programme is approved by the Malaysian Optical Council. Upon full accreditation, the programme will be included in the list of registrable qualifications within the Malaysian Optical Act (1991). The BOptom (Hons) at SEGi is a programme that aims to produce graduates who are not only competent clinically in the art and science of eye care, but also with an excellent know-how of the business of vision care in a wider perspective.
Optometry graduates have the opportunity to work in government hospitals, private practices, ophthalmic or contact lens industry, research and also tertiary education.
