    Introduction

    Founded in 1977 and originally called Systematic College, SEGi University now has six campuses and five training centres across Malaysia.     13 IPTA Antara 35 IPT Diiktiraf Cemerlang

    SHAH ALAM: Sebanyak 13 institusi pengajian tinggi awam (IPTA) merupakan antara 35 institusi pengajian tinggi (IPT) yang diberi pengiktirafan cemerlang menerusi Sistem Penarafan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi pada tahun 2011 (Setara ’11).
    IPTA yang disenaraikan cemerlang adalah Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) dan Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
    IPTA lain yang turut mendapat penarafan cemerlang ialah Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) dan Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).
    Bagi institusi pengajian tinggi swasta (IPTS), sebanyak 22 universiti dan kolej universiti turut menerima penarafan tahap cemerlang.
    IPTS berkenaan adalah Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, Binary University of Management and Entrepreneurship, Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences, International Medical University, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, Management and Science University, Monash University Sunway Campus, Multimedia University, Nilai University, Open University Malaysia, SEGi University, Sunway University, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Taylor’s University dan University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
    Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin berkata, Setara bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualiti, kebertanggungjawaban dan prestasi universiti dan kolej universiti di Malaysia.
    “Ia merupakan antara inisiatif berterusan KPT (Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi) untuk menerapkan budaya penambahbaikan kualiti berterusan serta meningkatkan daya saing IPT di negara ini.
    “Fokus Setara ’11 adalah kualiti pengajaran dan pembelajaran pada tahap enam (peringkat Ijazah Pertama) Kerangka Kelayakan Malaysia yang dijalankan universiti dan kolej universiti,” katanya.
    Beliau berkata demikian pada sidang media selepas majlis sambutan Hari Ulang Tahun Kelima Agensi Kelayakan Malaysia (MQA) di sini, Khamis.
    Mohamed Khaled berkata, Setara ’11 merupakan penarafan kali ketiga dilaksanakan selepas penarafan pertama melalui Setara 2007 dan penarafan kedua melalui Setara ’09, dan penarafan kali ini turut melibatkan IPT yang melaksanakan pendidikan secara terbuka dan jarak jauh (ODL).
    “Instrumen Setara ’11 terbahagi kepada tiga aspek iaitu input (20 peratus), proses (40 peratus) dan output (40 peratus) dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Penilaiannya melibatkan 26 kriteria dan 62 indikator yang secara amnya adalah hampir sama dengan instrumen Setara ‘09,” katanya.
    Menurut Mohamed Khaled, pencapaian IPT dikategorikan kepada enam tahap dengan tahap enam iaitu 'Terbilang' sebagai tahap tertinggi dan tahap satu iaitu 'Lemah' sebagai paling rendah.
    "Sebanyak 16 universiti dan kolej universiti menduduki tahap empat iaitu sangat baik, dan hanya sebuah universiti pada tahap tiga (Baik).
    "Tiada universiti atau kolej universiti yang mencapai tahap Terbilang dan juga dikategorikan pencapaiannya pada tahap dua iaitu memuaskan dan tahap satu (Lemah)," katanya.
    Setara ’11 dilaksanakan oleh Agensi Kelayakan Malaysia (MQA), sebuah agensi di bawah Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi (KPT).

    Student Services Centre
    The Student Service Centre (SSC) operates as a one-stop-centre to provide students with support and guidance throughout their studies. The four areas that are handled by the SSC include:
    1. Student Residence – to provide students with a home away from home that is clean, secure and comfortable.
    2. International Office – to assist international students with immigration matters pertaining to their studies and to assist international students in adapting to the local culture and environment.
    3. Student Activities – to create a climate in which students have a well-rounded education experience through clubs, societies and workshops, sports, student events/activities, recreational and outdoor activities.
    4. Student Care Unit – to provide advise and assistance to students in areas such as personal and career counselling, university and job placements and student needs.

    Accommodation
    Aside from offering internationally recognised qualifications, SEGi boasts strategically located campuses which offer students various options for affordable accommodation as well as all required amenities, making it an attractive choice for higher education amongst international students.

Through clubs and societies such as the Photography Club, Youth Ablaze, De Linggua, students are able to participate in extra-curricular activities such as camping, mountain climbing, futsal and bowling. Students are also encouraged to participate in community services and activities.

    Orientation
    Orientation, at the start of the academic year, is extremely important as it is the first exciting step into life at SEGi. The orientation programme offers students the opportunity to become acquainted with SEGi, its staff, fellow students, courses, facilities and environment. It is also a time for students to make new friends, learn their way around campus and get to know the social and sporting clubs and societies that may interest them.

    38 Students from Guangxi University for Nationalities successfully completed their 10-month English course

    Students from Guangxi University for Nationalities (GXUN), China were ecstatic on 12 July after receiving certificates for successfully completing the Intensive English Programme at SEGi University College (SEGi UC).
    The joyous event was organized by the International Marketing Office to bid farewell to the group of 38 students, as the students took to the stand to share their experiences studying at SEGi University College and to share their heartfelt gratitude to SEGi. Some of the students are looking forward to continue their Master’s programme.
    The students are the first batch from GXUN to participate in the Study Abroad Programme and were here for a total of 10 months to master the fundamental nuances of the English Language taught at the Centre for Languages, SEGi UC. Another 49 students from GXUN have signed up for this Programme due to commence in September 2012.
    A Memorandum of Understanding between SEGi University College and GXUN on 15 June 2011 allows GXUN to participate in the Study Abroad Programme, which includes 10-month English language proficiency training and the opportunity to study at the Kota Damansara campus. Students are awarded the Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of the programme.
    GXUN recognizes the 10- month programme at SEGi UC as equivalent to an internship since it enables students to increase their employability. GXUN aims to send their students overseas to gain the experience of living and studying in a foreign country after their diploma or degree studies. They will spend a year abroad as part of their internship. Besides SEGi, GXUN has also sent students to other countries such as Thailand and the Philippines.
    The students from GXUN gained an invaluable exposure to Malaysian hospitality and culture as well as the opportunity to improve their English proficiency.

  • Exploring the Faculty of Medicine at SEGi University College

    Considered as one of the most in-demand and glamorous of faculties in the whole of SEGi University College, the Faculty of Medicine offers the popular MBBS or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Course within this faculty. As opposed to other universities or colleges, dentistry and pharmacy courses do not fall within the same faculty, instead both courses have their own faculties for better management of these courses within SEGi. The Faculty of Dentistry manages courses such as the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, the Certification for Dental Surgery Assistants and well as the Foundation in Science, while the Faculty of Pharmacy and Applied Health Sciences facilitate courses such as Master of Pharmacy, Foundation in Science, Diploma in Pharmacy and also the Bachelor in Pharmacy. Let us nevertheless concentrate on the Faculty of Medicine as well as the MBBS course that is offers at its flagship Kota Damansara campus.
    The awarding institution for the MBBS would be SEGi University College, and the course would take a minimum of five years to complete.     The MBBS course will take five years to complete, and has been broken into three different phases, Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Three. SEGi emphasizes on early patient contact, thus students would be exposed to patients and clinical experience from Phase One onwards instead of later years as per expected within the usual medical course. Phase One will consume two years, and will expose students to general medical science subjects that include the likes of Pathology, Anatomy and Community Medicine. Subsequently medical students would undergo Phase Two (one year) and Phase Three (two years) before eventually graduating as a medical doctor.
    With view of the excellent facilities and availability of high-quality lecturers at SEGi, studying MBBS at SEGi’s Faculty of Medicine is probably a good move for those aspiring to become competent medical doctors in Malaysia.
