Learning Through Discovery at SUKD

Ms Anne Subashini Sivanathan from the British Council sharing about why play is important to children
Students participate in games while learning how to include children with special needs at play
Just as children learn through discovery, SEGi strongly emphasises on practicum sessions so that DECE students are more prepared to work with children in the future.
Recently, Ms Anne Subashini Sivanathan from the British Council conducted a session on the initiative “Play for All”, to raise awareness of children’s rights to play under Article 31 of UNICEF’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. This provision highlights the fact that all children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities. For this session’s purpose, the spotlight was especially on children with special needs.
Ms Sivanathan had the DECE students to recall games they had played as children, and later on organised several games that the DECE students can modify to ensure children with special needs can participate in those games. The students had a fun time playing and learning how to incorporate lessons into play.
