Bachelor of Science (Hons) Psychology
Psychology is about understanding people and studying psychology is to study the human condition, to attempt to understand human behaviours and experiences and to use that understanding to try and predict future behaviours and experiences. Our degree programmes are designed to provide a sound, core knowledge of psychology and how it applies to many aspects of the human condition such as child development, crime, education, mental health or the behaviour of groups of people. Psychology students acquire many useful and marketable skills during their degree. Their level of organisational, theoretical, analytical, and IT skills (amongst many others) makes them very attractive to the graduate employment market in general and their specific knowledge of human behaviours also makes them very desirable to psychology-based employers.
The programme aims to:
- To produce a scientific understanding of mind, brain, behaviour and experience and the complex interactions between them
- To present multiple perspectives of psychology in a way that fosters critical evaluation
- To lead to an understanding of ‘real-life’ applications of psychological theory within the full range of experience and behaviour
- To develop knowledge such that it leads to an ability to appreciate and critically evaluate theory, research and application
- To develop an understanding of the role of empirical evidence in the creation and constraint of theory and how theory guides the collection and interpretation of empirical data
- To include the acquisition and knowledge of a range of research skills and methods for investigating experience and behaviour, culminating in the ability to conduct independent research
Graduates of the programme are well qualified to be employed in the education industry as special needs education teachers, pre-school educators, lecturers and trainers. Their employment opportunity extends to non-education positions as well such as mid to top level management executives, consultants for counselling and business, mental healthcare writers for books and magazines, social workers and mental healthcare providers. Those who have interest in running a business of their own have the option becoming entrepreneurs.
