New Moot Court lets SEGi law students hone their skills

Order, order: Dr Jerip is flanked by SEGi College faculty members as he sounds the judge’s gavel during the opening ceremony of the college’s new Moot Courtroom yesterday.
KUCHING: Students of SEGi College Sarawak will now be able to re-enact the thrill of courtroom proceedings with their new Moot Courtroom, which was launched yesterday.
Specially designed for the college’s law faculty, the moot court will give aspiring law students the chance to experience what it feels like to be inside a courtroom, learn the proper procedures as well as hone their mooting skills.
“Today, we add yet another important facility to the college, ensuring that our law students will have a simulated environment to practice what they have learnt over the course of their studies here at SEGi College,” said SEGi College Sarawak principal Elina Tiu.
“The moot court is an intricate part of the curriculum, and joins other facilities in our college such as the faculty of hospitality’s hotel room, banquet and bar simulations.
“In the future, we will also hold annual mooting competitions to encourage the next generation of lawyers and to give them a better sense of what being a lawyer is all about,” she added.
Also in attendance during the Moot Court’s opening ceremony was Assistant Public Health Minister Dr Jerip Susil, who applauded the establishment of new facility, saying that it would certainly have a positive impact on students and on the quality of the next generation’s graduates.
“Standing here today, I feel like I am actually in a courtroom,” said Dr Jerip during his speech. For those choosing to pursue law, you must first be aware of how dynamic, diverse and challenging this vocation is.
“It is through leading law schools like SEGi that will be able to assist the next generation of lawyers, whether they are in court, lecturing in universities or advising corporations to be fully equipped with the analytical skills needed to ensure that the law fulfils the task that our society and environment sets for them,” he added.
SEGi College Sarawak will also add three more new programmes to their already impressive list of courses, which are Bachelor with Honours in Business and Human Resource Management, Bachelor with Honours in Business and Marketing Management and Bachelor with Honours in International Tourism and Hospitality Management.
