Segian Talks by ECCE Experts at SCSJ

April 23, 2014
Datin Radziah has about 30 years’ experience in the ECCE fieldDr Leow is also just as experienced
SEGi College Subang Jaya Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) students were recently treated to a series of riveting discourse in the world of ECCE with special guest speakers, Datin Radziah Mohd. Daud and Dr Irene Leow Kim Choo, who have helped pioneered ECCE as a professional career in Malaysia and have helped highlight the importance of Early Childhood Education to families.
The talk is part of a series called “Segian Talks”, an effort to create a stimulating environment for intellect discourse for students to think outside the box, to learn real-life experiences of people who have worked in the industry they will be pursuing in the future, to inspire students that the career journey will be worthwhile, and to provide students with special insights beyond textbooks.
Everyone now knows quality education is crucial in early years of a child’s life, and the education he or she gets not only depends on the child’s parents but also the educators he or she meets at pre-school or the daycare centre. Several years ago, the norms for these centres were to enlist helpers who do not possess paper qualification to teach or care for young children, and this may not bode well for these students’ future.
For this reason, Datin Radziah began by sharing her 30-year journey in the world of ECCE. She was a qualified nurse and had worked in hospitals in Alor Setar and London. Upon her return to Malaysia, she worked at the National Family Planning Board where she was tasked with the establishment of childcare centres by the Board.
Datin Radziah then left to establish her own home-based playgroup to be closer to her family. With much encouragement, she opened a larger school and devoted her time and effort to raising the standards of ECCE. Her hard work was recognised by the government and she was instrumental in setting up various pre-schools in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and even Kuching. Datin Radziah also assisted in the establishment of daycare centres for several government-linked companies (GLCs) and also the School in Hospital programmes. Datin Radziah was also appointed the Industry Advisor for ECCE programmes at SEGi University Group recently.
Besides sharing her extraordinary journey, Datin Radziah also extolled Segians that the ECCE field guarantees satisfaction beyond monetary value, and that one cannot be in the field without passion for children because these young people can sense an adult who is not passionate about them.
Dr Irene Leow then took centrestage to share the importance of being a professional ECCE teacher. She has 26 years’ of experience in the ECCE field as the Principal and Operator of Seri Mawar Childcare and Development Centre in Ampang, Selangor. Dr Leow is also a certified trainer for childcare programmes under the Welfare Department and Association of Registered Childcare Providers Malaysia (ARCPM). She is also a member of the Professional Certification Board of the ECCE and is also a part-time lecturer at SEGi College Subang Jaya since 2004.
Dr Leow expounded on latest scientific findings that reveal early experiences are important for the development of the brain. Quality ECCE can help reduce school dropout rate and crime rate in later years, while poor early child care and education can create irreversible harm.
As a result, the government is now raising the bar for ECCE standards. By year 2020, all pre-schools in Malaysia will have to adhere to national quality standards, including a provision that every teacher must have a minimum academic qualification at Diploma level.
However, this does not mean that higher qualification automatically bestows professionalism. Dr Leow emphasised that a professional is not only knowledgeable but also competent in his or her job. The person embodies all professional ethics, strives for continuous professional growth by constantly learning and improving, speaks well and dresses well.
Dr Leow pointed out those professional occupations such as doctors, lawyers and engineers have professional boards to belong to. As such, there will be one called the ECCE Council for professionals in the ECCE field by 2017 to ensure standards are adhered to and only qualified persons are providing ECCE services.
Both Datin Radziah and Dr Leow encouraged students that the ECCE teachers play crucial roles in the lives of the community, so even if other people do not have high regards for the profession, ECCE professionals are blessed in so many other ways when they invest in the lives of young children.
At the end of the session, the students departed the auditorium, inspired and motivated to pursue success in life and career, with a renewed zeal in the ECCE field.
