Here is Emily again, sharing her opinion that we should be making our own decision and choices in life.
Knowing What You Want
by Emily Chong
In my previous post, I wrote about what kind of mask you should wear to define yourself. This is going to be a sequel to it.
Most of us are living in a structure that others have created. Most of the times, we are being told what to do and how to do it. We have never really figured out what it is that we are doing and why are we doing it.
When our mind is matured enough to make judgments and decisions? It is time for us to start to do the thinking. We have to start questioning, why, what, when, who, where and perhaps how on every decision made.
When exactly do we start to do the thinking? I would say when you start your college or university.  When we are schooling, we are still in the process of learning, we have no clues what is right and wrong. Hence, it is fine to follow what your parents or your teachers told you to do. They know what is best for us as they have been through it and done it. So, following rules and protocols is what we could do at that age.
The first decision you have to make as you leave school – which college do I join and what is the course that fits me best?
Do not just follow what our parents recommend us to take but find out what is your talent and interest. If you have no talent or interest in what your parents recommend to you, why bother to pay the same amount of money where you can invest in a car? We are the one that is going to commit for at least 4 years to get a degree in college, hence, it is our responsibility to plan wisely whether or not we like what we are doing. Find out carefully what are the subjects offered in the course and even better, the syllabus.
In case, if you are the type of person who is basically good at anything- a well-rounded student. Well, you can put yourself in 5 years time, just by imagining what you want to do for your living. It is never too early to start planning; otherwise, you are merely wasting your time in college. If you see yourself as a professional doctor, a lawyer or even a pharmacist, go for it and try to do well in it. These are the few courses that require a license or an academic certificate to be qualified as a professional as they have to acquire certain knowledge and skills.
I believe everyone is something if you know what your talent is. It is time for you to find out yourself and know what you do best so that you can contribute your best to the society. We have taken a lot from this world, have we given back yet?
