My first tiny entrepreneurial step was as a newspaper vendor at age 9, selling Chinese daily papers at the roadside each morning before going to school in Sibu. I roped in a few classmates to be my sub-agents.
In secondary school, I contributed articles to the Borneo Bulletin, a weekly paper in Brunei, by translating news stories from Sarawak’s Chinese newspapers. I was the richest kid in class, earning about RM50 in contribution fees each month.
At age 20, I became the Chief Editor of East Malaysia’s largest English paper, the Borneo Post. My Deputy Chief Editor was my Form Two English teacher.
Decades later, I was to be at the helm of Malaysia’s largest English paper, the STAR, for two years as its Executive Deputy Chairman. I had done a training stint there as cadet reporter.
As a working adult, I went back to college to take up an external law degree program. On graduation, I bought over the institution in Kuching and became known as “Hii who bought his college”. The college had six students
My corporate journey has been one big roller coaster ride as well as an incredible experience. I made, and learned from, some big-time mistakes along the way.
In business, my philosophy is simple. I am a self-confessed Johnny-come-lately. I let others take the lead. I don’t want to re-invent the wheel. I assess the gaps in the market, I fill in the vacuum. I now learn from other people’s mistakes, I hope not to make my own anymore.
Today, public-listed SEGi University Group is the largest private institution of higher learning in Malaysia, with about 28, 000 students. My private investment arm, HCK Capital Group has substantial interests in the property, media, F & B, technology and manufacturing sectors.
I am glad that in those initial difficult years, I have told my detractors to give up trying to make me give up. You should too, if and when there are times when you feel defeated or overwhelmed.
