SEGi’s Centres of Excellence
SEGi University Group (SEGi) has had its footprint in the education scene of Malaysia for over 36 years. Today SEGi is one of Malaysia’s largest private education groups. To continue chalking the milestones and recording its successes, SEGi has decided to capitalize on the Group’s collective expertise in a project to create eight Centres of Excellence (CoE).
The taskforce set up by SEGi had identified eight focus areas where CoEs would be created. SEGi aims to build upon the expertise and foundation amassed to transform the Group from a generalist institution into the 8 specialised CoEs. The eight CoEs are :
- Business and Accountancy Centre of Excellence;
- Hospitality and Tourism Centre of Excellence;
- Early Childhood Care and Education Centre of Excellence;
- American Degree Program Centre of Excellence;
- Creative Arts and Design Centre of Excellence;
- Health Sciences Centre of Excellence;
- Engineering and Information Technology Centre of Excellence; &
- Pre-University Centre of Excellence.
The role of the CoE is to act as the leader in the development and continuous improvement of the academic programmes under its specialty for the institutions of the entire Group. The CoEs are expected to engage with industry experts and appoint those who are renowned in their fields of expertise as industry advisors, ambassadors or adjunct faculties of SEGi.
Each CoE will tap on the industrial experience and expertise of these industry advisors to contribute towards evaluation, improvements and enhancements of the relevant programme syllabi. This will ensure that SEGi’s programmes are relevant to industry and meet the needs of employers. CoEs will also organise series of talks, guest lectures and industry placements to further engage SEGi’s students with industry at as early a stage of their studies as possible.
In addition, each CoE is tasked with evaluating its respective facilities and equipment for teaching and learning to ensure that these are at par or exceed the expectations of the industry partners. This includes sourcing for overseas university partners to jointly offer programmes to Malaysia students.
So far, two CoEs, namely Business and Accountancy CoE and Hospitality and Tourism CoE have been established in SEGi College Kuala Lumpur. The remaining 6 CoEs in the pipeline are scheduled to be launched in phases.
There is only one ultimate aim for the CoEs, that is to attract quality students and turn them into quality and highly employable graduates thereby delivering the expected performance to all SEGi’s stakeholders.
